Synopsis from Fully Booked:
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.
The scene- the sights, sounds and even smell this fiction provides is fantastic. While reading I could almost picture myself walking inside circus tents with a bag of
Chef Tony’s caramel popcorn in my hand, allowing myself to get lost in the magical sights and sound of the Cirque des Rêves.
Erin Morgenstern - like a real magician reveals the magic slowly, gracefully and with flourish. However there were some truly boring parts and I wish there was something more to Celia and Marco’s personality! I wish their characters were developed more. They are the main characters and but were a bit bland. There wasn’t much about them that I could relate to as a fellow human! It felt like the whole novel wasn’t told in the smoothest process too, some parts were not so cohesive. This will do better as a graphic novel than a novel, in my opinion.
This was a light read for me. Though the story was beautiful it wasn’t substantial. I cannot attach myself to it. It didn’t invoke violent or passionate reactions from me. Perhaps the underdeveloped characters has something to do with that. Or maybe it’s just personal taste!
Night Circus was listed as Adult Fiction but I think it should’ve been Teen Fic if one short and sexy part didn’t exist. Lol. I give it three out of five stars. This is not a bad debut novel at all! Give it a try! ;)
This book is available at Fully Booked at the price of 299.00 pesos (paper back). I recommend it to those who wish to be transported to a magical place.
